Juliet Simms has helped young adults find their own individuality – their own voices - for many years.

While working on making it in the music industry, Juliet Simms has gone out of her way with her own time to help people both individually and through her support of causes. She has supported organizations like Keep-A-Breast Foundation, To Write Love on Her Arms and others over the years.

When we started a program to raise awareness to green and healthy action in 2010, Juliet Simms was one of the first artists to jump in and show her support, and last year Juliet volunteered her time to help our new program by reporting to fans on the Warped Tour.

Juliet Simms is one of 8 remaining contestants on “The Voice” and has had great reviews by judges and fans of all ages every week. “The Voice” is focused on picking the best singer and not the person with the best back story, look or personality. In the opinion of many fans, Juliet is that singer.

As a parent of two teenagers myself I know how important people like Juliet are to our kids and to the future success of our society. No matter the outcome of the voting, the fact that Juliet’s voice is being heard by so many is a good thing. We wish her all the best success on every level. She has earned it with her heart and perseverance.

Our summer contest has officially come to a close. Thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to Alita and Ashley, our two winners of The Summer Set prizes! Check out how they were green below

ASHLEY (pictured above)

I’ve been GREEN this summer by biking just about everywhere instead of driving! Rather than taking out the car to run to the bank or the store, my mom and I bike every day to town to do our errands We’re lessening our carbon footprint by eliminating TONS of gasoline consumption–we’ve totaled about 600 miles so far this summer! Biking also helps us stay fit and save money. I definitely encourage everyone to take the old bike out of storage and go for a ride whenever you can! It’s so relaxing and the benefits are endless!

ALITA

In an effort to make my lifestyle more eco-friendly, this summer my family and I worked on several “green” projects. First, my entire family helped each other to make gardens in their backyards with various vegetables and plants. The gardens were a great success, leading to numerous amounts of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, squash and lots of other food. Second, I made a lot of eco-friendly jewelry to wear back to school out of pop tabs, garage sale items, bottle caps, old buttons, zippers, and items that would normally be thrown away. Third, my cousins and I bought clothes from vintage and second hand shops. The clothes are both cute and environmentally friendly. Fourth, I take all our aluminum cans to a recycling center down the street every week and also recycle all our paper items, since we had a lot of unnecessary paper from past school years and notes when I cleaned out our basement. Lastly, we have stopped buying plastic bottles and every family member now owns an aluminum BPA free reuseable water bottle! Even though some of the contributions my family and I have made seem kind of minuscule, it’s a big start on making our lives much more eco-friendly in hope that we can preserve the beautiful world we live in.

Look out for a new Fall contest coming soon…!

One of the easiest and most popular ways to go green is by reducing your use of plastic water bottles and purchasing a re-usable one. And with all the different options, it’s difficult to find the greenest option out there. The truth is, almost all re-usable water bottles are now certified as BPA free, and that’s one of the most important things to look for when searching for the perfect bottle. BPA stands for bisphenol A, and there have been multiple studies as to the dangerous effects BPA can have on the human body. A bottle made of polycarbonate plastic, as some typical water bottles do, is likely to have BPA in it. Logically, a metal water bottle would then become the safest, which is true. You can find an inexpensive metal water bottle at your local Walmart or Target. Just be sure that the metal is not coated with paint, which could have additional toxins in it!

As you may have noticed, though, plastic re-usable bottles are the most popular. Not surprising, as they are less expensive to produce then the metal, and are more convenient for the majority of the public, as they are less heavy. One of the most innovative new bottles is the Water Bobble, a water bottle with a built in filter. The filter in the bottle removes any impurities in the water before you drink it, and it makes the water you’re drinking almost identical to water you’d find in a mass produced water bottle. This also helps if you live in an area where the quality of your drinking water is a little questionable. The Bobble itself saves up to 300 bottles of water per filter, however, the $6.95 filter should be replaced every two months, or every 40 gallons. Add that to the approximately $10 cost of the bottle, and it becomes a bit of an investment. However, the bottles and the filters are all guaranteed BPA free, are made of 100% recycled plastic, and are recyclable should you decide that you don’t like the bottle. So, it’s a very green investment!

One of the oldest and most popular brands of bottle is the Nalgene bottle. With over 15 different options of bottles, the popularity isn’t surprising. A nice thought to keep in mind with the Nalgene bottles, however, is that every product is guaranteed 100% BPA free, and Nalgene works with four different eco-companies, including filterforgood.com and the Colorado Environmental Coalition. Nalgene also has it’s own Community Sustainability Program. Nalgene’s biggest competitor, or so it seems, is the new and ever-more-popular Camelbak. All of Camelbak’s plastic bottles are BPA free, and they have invented a technology that filters the water like the Bobble. Camelbak has partnered with water.org, and the purchase of their collaboration bottle brings safe drinking water to people in third world countries. But Camelbak has not partnered with an eco-concious companies, though they do endorse the move to a disposable bottle free workplace. So in the battle between Nalgene and Camelbak, Nalgene has made more moves to be an environmental company.

Go green and go water smart! Remember, a non-brand-specific water bottle is just as good as a major brand’s bottle. If you choose a plastic bottle, remember to check for the BPA free stamp, and if you purchase a metal bottle, make sure it’s not coated in paint. Both are eco-friendly options, it’s all up to what is most convenient to you! Enjoy your water, and enjoy your planet, everyone!

Earth Lust and Kleen Kanteen have some pretty awesome bottles, so check those out!

The Vans Warped Tour has become one of the most eco-friendly tour festivals, especially with the launch of the Vans Eco-Initiative. One of the many parts of the Eco-Initiative is a volunteer day done with the Warped tour bands and crew members. This year, that volunteer day took place on July 25th in Baltimore City, Maryland, through a volunteer opportunity being held by the organization Blue Water Baltimore. At the Pavement to Prairies party, volunteers helped to turn a city school’s parking lot into a garden. Ashley Traut, the senior project manager for storm water and community outreach at Blue Water Baltimore, gave me some more information on the “party.”

Could you tell me a little bit more about the event? How did you become linked to the Vans Warped Tour?

This work is being funded by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. We are working with six city schools to remove pavement and install rain gardens and conservation landscaping in an effort to reduce stormwater and increase local outdoor education opportunities for city students. The Vans Warped Tour contacted one of our staff, Eliza Steinmeier, who heads our Waterkeeper division, looking for volunteer opportunities for their Eco Service Day. The more traditional stream clean up and weed pull was discussed, but I was feeling adventurous and floated the idea of the depave effort.

What made you pick this spot for the event?

There are numerous city schools with un-needed asphalt and concrete, which is often in disrepair and unsightly. We chose to work with the current six schools based on a number of factors including school and community interest, estimated stormwater reduction, visibility, and location within our watersheds. The project at ACCE is much larger than any of the other projects and a tremendously exciting opportunity to really highlight the benefits of such work.

How has being linked with the Vans Warped Tour affected the event? Do you feel as though you’ve received more volunteers through this connection?

The Warped Tour connection has been phenomenal. Kate Truscott and Allison Skiff have been incredible helping to organize the logistics for the day and assist us with PR, networking, and in-kind support. The Warped Tour buzz has absolutely driven volunteers to this event.

Green quotables from this interview:

Renee, on how the tour has been going: The tour has been excellent. We have done so much when it comes to the world from thousands and thousands of pounds of recycling that we’ve collected to the biodiesel that we fuel to our solar-powered stages, it’s going really really well this year.

Kyle from Keep a Breast on the NTR: The Non-Toxic Revolution is Keep-A-Breast’s newest Campaign. Basically what we’re trying to do is educate people about the different toxins we’re exposed to every day that lead to cancer initiation. So things like deodorants and lotions, plastic water bottles, things like that.

Renee, on who helps do the clean ups: It’s all volunteer based. We have 20 volunteers that are able to sign up online before the tour starts. They come for each city and they help us pick up bottles and cans all day long. We clean back stages, we clean bus areas, and we clean up catering. Anything you could think of that might get a little dirty, we go in and recycle it all for them.

Juliet asks Keep A Breast: What kind of campaigns or activites are you running related to the Non-Toxic Revolution?
Kyle: Well we have our traveling education booth out here at Warped Tour to travel all around the United States. We also have our plastic sucks petition- it’s kind of like a pledge for people to use less plastic to lower the risk of cancer and help out the environment. We also have our campus clubs which we’re starting up and it’s going to be getting kids involved in their local communities, making a change in their community to be greener and to educate more people about the Non-Toxic- Revolution

Dave from Big D and The Kids Table on the Non-Profits: They are pretty much the hardest workers out here. They have to get up at an ungodly hour, be in the sun all day, and they don’t get the “hey, nice set” at the end of the day

Juliet asks: If a water bottle is left, like, in your car and there’s water in it and say it’s in there in the sun, baking in there for a couple days or whatever, you should just not drink that?
Kyle: You should NOT drink that!

Dave, on being green when not on Warped: We had Sarah from Rock n’ Renew meet with us once, and that organization tries to help bands from their vans to their rehearsal space to their homes repurpose their living environments to be more green.

Kyle, on the goals of the Non-Toxic Revolution: Hopefully, it will just make [people] aware of the things that they’re exposed to everyday so they can lower their risk of cancer and live a healthier happier life.

Dave: The kids these days, meaning people in middle school, high school, college, they’re like, ready to do it. In their brain, they’re all ready to do it. But when we were kids, in that age, we didn’t know fully what it was all about. We had to learn… it was like “Why are we recycling? I heard they did that in World War 2”. So it seems like everyone’s ready to go, they just need the adult, or themselves to have the gunshot: this is what we’re doing, this is how we’re doing it.

Ryan of Big D: A lot of fans listen to bands, do what they say. [Warped Tour] has been great with getting bands more involved and speaking out to say that they’re into it and they support it.

Renee, on the weirdest things they find during clean ups: There’s a lot of shoes. People lose a lot of shoes, but only one… and flip flops. My volunteers always find money. I never find money, but you never know what you’re gonna find after those show

How are YOU being green this summer?
