Guest Blog: Trevor Backer – TM of Polar Bear Club

tracker

This is a guest blog from Trevor Backer, aka Tracker, esteemed tour manager of Polar Bear Club and reluctant recycling aficionado. He wrote this for the second edition of the Vans Warped Tour “Guide to not Being an Environmental Disaster”, which was not able to come to print this year.

Story by Trevor Backer
I’ve never supported [...]

The Casualties talk GREEN & Eco-bags

Jake: I’m Incredibly Green, are you?
IG: What do you think is the easiest thing a person can do to become more eco-friendly?
Jake: What I do, and I feel a lot of people should start doing this, is take your own bags to the grocery store. I try not to use plastic at all. People love [...]

The Sparring Talks GREEN

Jay: I’m Jay from the Sparring and I am Incredibly Green!
IG: Do you think recycling should be made more convenient?
Jay: It should be made more convenient! I would do that always if it were more convenient. I’m confused as sh*t which can to put something in. They give you a long list of what you [...]

Confide is Incredibly Green!

Joel: What’s up, my name’s Joel from the band Confide and I am Incredibly Green.

IG: What does being green mean to you?

Joel: Being green is being aware; to me it’s being aware and being concerned, and not being wasteful. You can help out a lot; a lot of people and a lot of animals and a lot of different things, everything ties together, you know, it’s all a chain reaction, a circle effect. Be smart about your stuff, it’ll help others.

IG: What is the biggest environmental issue today?

Joel: Well that oil spill is pretty messed up, that’ll effect generations.

IG: If you could change one thing about the environment, what would you change?

Joel: Smog! I hate it! I hate breathing it every day in Los Angeles and California.

IG: Does your family recycle when you’re at home?

Joel: Yeah!

IG: Do you think caring about the environment is worth it in the long run?

Joel: Oh yeah, of course!

The Mighty Regis is IG.. Are you?

The Mighty Regis: We are the Mighty Regis and we are Incredibly Green!

Incredibly Green: Have you ever come across a venue that was exceptionally green?

MR: There’s definitely some that are better than others that have recycling available, really obvious that’s just as easy as putting something in the garbage if there’s recycling right there.

MR: The Toronto and Montreal venue had teams of people that walked around with bags and made sure that it was clean.

MR: Yeah almost every venue does have recycling.

IG: If you could change one thing about the environment, what would you change?

MR: It’s been pretty hot! If we could change the temperature…

MR: You got to pick one!

MR: Ohh, global warming!

IG: Change global warming!

MR: Reverse global warming!

MR: It’s just the general impact of like, all our buses and all our trucks have created one big carbon footprint this tour and hopefully…

MR: Yeah, we use reusable water bottles!

MR: Our stage is solar powered.

IG: Really? That’s awesome!

MR: Yeah, the Kevin Says stage is solar powered.

MR: I’d like to say we did that, but no…

MR: Yeah, we had no part in that.

IG: Do you and your families recycle when you’re at home?

MR: Absolutely!

IG: What do you think is the easiest thing a person can change to become more eco-friendly?

MR: Wow…um…

MR: Just caring!

MR: Yeah, more respect or resources, like in every possible way. Conserving what you use every step along the way whether it’s water or plastic, paper or anything!

MR: If you make that conscious step to recycle…

MR: Making smart choices.

MR: Yeah, I would say that really easy ways to conserve is with water. Most of us, like when we’re brushing our teeth turn the water on; let it run while we’re brushing our teeth. A really smart way to save gallons of water is to turn it off while you’re brushing your teeth. And you know, over, I would say three fifths of the world doesn’t have clean water. We have no idea what that’s really like. We waste a lot of water.

MR: I personally take hour and a half long showers… I’m a big contributor.

IG: It’s your fault, global warming is your fault!

MR: We’re picking up his slack!

Set Your Goals is IG. Get with it!

Dan: What’s up I’m Dan.
Jordan: And I’m Jordan!
Dan: And we are Incredibly Green!
IG: What does being green mean to you?

Jordan: I think just doing your part where you can, and being aware of what’s going on. Obviously it starts with one person….and the starfish that got scattered onto the sea shore and this guy comes by and he’s like oh I’ll help bring them back to the ocean and he throws one in then all these other people come out and they throw them all in…
IG: If you could change one thing about the environment, what would you change?

Jordan: I would get more people to work together on issues like greenhouse gases, slowing the rate of those down. And obviously like, not just with this oil spill, but like every year constantly the ocean is just being like violated and destroyed. I would really like to see people having more respect for marine life.
IG: Do you think caring about the environment is worth it in the long run?

Dan: Yes, it is! I think it’s more than caring for the environment, what’s really important is changing people’s attitude. Really, just trying to get kind of the core of human production, human desires are what really need to change. That’s the big step in making an accomplishment. But that could be made; you know basic fundamental attitude and actions are what really need to be changed.
IG: What are some ways you can be green on the road, is it possible at all?

Jordan: On the road? We actually are not bad about keeping trash cleaned up.
Dan: Trash is definitely your every day thing, just not throwing out stuff all over the place. More than anything too it’s, you know, spreading the word as well. Just trying to kinda get it into our fans heads that this world is doomed. Well, it is at the pace that it’s going right now, so…It’s just like I said, trying to change people’s attitudes is another thing that we can do.
Jordan: I think one thing that’s cool too regarding being on Warped Tour and how to stay green, a lot of bands this year are doing these text charities where you text the number to… you text the word to a number and it’s like a dollar, that’s really cool.
IG: Is there anything you want to say to your fans to urge them to become green?

Jordan: Yes! I would just like to say try to get involved when you can with any non-profit organization at all. There are tons of fun activities that go on in your local communities as well as on a nation-wide basis.  But start with your community first.
Dan: I would say, just don’t be ignorant! That’s the first step. Be aware, that’s a lot too. Not just, living in your own bubble, being aware that this world is on a path to destruction right now and if you’re just going to sit back and act like nothings going to happen then you’re going to have a pretty big wake-up call.

Alex of Hey Monday is IG

Alex: My name is Alex, I play in band called Hey Monday and I am Incredibly Green!

IG: What is the biggest environmental issue today?

Alex: I think the BP oil spill, that’s ridiculous. I’m from Florida too.

IG: So it’s really affecting you guys!

IG: What are some ways you can go green on the road, is it possible to be green at all?

Alex: Yeah, it’s definitely possible. I’m always thinking about conserving water, not wasting anything, not littering; I hate when people litter. I mean, we do what we can. It’s not the easiest on the road but it’s not the hardest.

IG: Do you and your family recycle when you’re at home?

Alex: Yeah, my family is super good with it, mostly my brother; he’s probably the biggest influence on me when it comes to that.

IG: If you could change one thing about the environment what would you change?

Alex: I would invent solar cars so that we didn’t have to use so many natural resources to run our automobiles.

IG: What do you think is the easiest thing a person can change to become more eco-friendly?

Alex: It’s all about changing your mind set, just be concerned. Every time you take a shower, understand that that water is draining into sewage and it’s done after that. Maybe they might recycle it over hundreds of years. As long as you’re just conscious that water is a natural resource and it’s not gonna be here forever. That’s the best that I can do!

Warped Tour Clean Up Day

Every year, bands, sponsors and crew from the Vans Warped Tour get together to spend an off-day doing an environmental relief project. This year, the tour went to Nashville, TN to help clean up areas that were affected by the recent floods.

This tour report is brought to you by the Warped Eco-Initiative.

VersaEmerge goes GREEN

An interview with Versaemerge at Warped Tour 7/11/10
VersaEmerge: We’re VersaEmerge and we are Incredibly Green!
IG: What is the biggest environmental issue today?
Sierra: The oil spill…probably.
Blake: I’m not actually sure. I mean, we’re seeing a lot about the oil spill. I dunno there’s a ton of things going on right now.
Sierra: It’s really close to my house so I’m kind of worried about it.
Blake: She lives on the Gulf.
IG: What kind of impact do you think the Warped Eco Initiative is making on the people who come to Warped Tour and your fans?
Sierra: Hopefully they are making an impact, I definitely see kids volunteering, wearing the shirts, picking up trash, so its good kids care enough to help.
Blake: It’s seems like every year you see more and more ways to recycle and stuff.
IG: What does being green mean to you?
Sierra: Being green to me is just kind of being more aware you know, recycling, using tap water instead of bottled water; that’s what my mom makes me do! You know, just being aware of what’s going on. Try not to littler, try not to be lazy.
IG: If you could change one thing about the environment, what would it be?
Sierra: I think I would change…
Blake: I wish we weren’t so reliable on oils, it’d be good if more people could make an effort to start, at least, using more gas efficient cars. One day when the oil runs out, they’re not kind of…left there.
Sierra: I think the dirt…the dirtiness. You know, the air is just not very clean anymore… It’s not good!
IG: Do you and your families recycle when you’re at home?
Sierra: Yes!
Blake: Yes!

Warped Eco Update: Volunteers in Ventura

“We met these guys last year on the first day of warped tour. They came up to the booth because they paid for their ticket with recycling at home. They came back for several days to join us last year and this year and even came as far as PHX! All paid for with bottles and cans.” – Tara

Punchline

Punchline Talks GREEN, “Ya Dummy!”

Story by Sydney Fontaine

Steve Soboalsi is the Vocalist/Guitarist for Pittsburgh alternative pop rock band, Punchline. He took some time to speak his mind about the environmental issues of today and how he likes to be Incredibly Green!

1. Why do you think it’s important for the youth to be involved with and care about the environmental issues today?

I think it’s important for youth to be trained to be green, because it’s incredibly lazy to not care and incredibly easy to clean up after
yourself

2. What does “going green” mean to you?

Going green means is the opposite of apathy.  Take a second and put that RC Cola can in a recycling bin ya dummy!

3. Have you come across a venue that’s been really eco-friendly and has recycling bins near every trashcan etc.?

No venues come to mind. In fact, I think it’s a shame that bars/clubs aren’t required by law to recycle!

4. Who in the band is the most eco-friendly? Who’s always going around, gathering cans, recycling a lot etc?

Pending my band’s permission I would like to crown myself the greenest dude in Punchline.

5. Did you grow up in an environmentally-friendly family?

My family began the recycle when the program was implemented in our town.  For a long time paper was not accepted.  Now they recycle everything.

6. What do you think is the easiest way that you’ve made your life more green?

I recycle in my home and prefer to live in the city where I do not have to drive much.  It took a few weeks to get in the habit of recycling, but now it is second nature!

7. What do you think is the most environmental issue today? Besides the oil spill because that’s really obvious.

Bars must recycle.  What a bunch of dirtbags.

8. Last but not least, what’s your favorite green tip that you wanna give to your fans?

Although we may die long before the problems of this planet begin to close in on us, take a moment and clean up after yourself and your dirty neighbor.

**Punchline releases their 5th studio album “Delightfully Pleased” August 10th!**

Warped Eco, Tyson Ritter & Don’t Hate on Haiti

Warped Eco Initiative interviews Tyson Ritter of All American Rejects to highlight his work with his charity, Dont hate on Haiti.

** Approximately 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people. About 3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease. An American taking a five-minute shower uses more water than a typical person in a developing country slum uses in a whole day. SO… NEVER TAKE SAFE WATER FOR GRANTED. Other countries don’t have the luxuries we have. **

Text WATER to 85944 to donate $10 to Charity: WATER

100% of your donation goes directly to Haiti to build wells.

After Midnight Project Talks GREEN on Tour

After Midnight Project: We’re After Midnight Project, and we’re Incredibly Green!

IG: What member of your band is the most eco-friendly?

AMP: That would be Spencer!

IG: What are some ways to be green on the road? Is it possible to be green at all?

AMP: It’s really hard as a touring band, and I know a lot of bands are making a lot of progress to change that, but…

AMP: There’s the uh, alternative fuel vans…

AMP: Alternative fuel is getting more and more popular, that’s a big one as far as kind of minimizing waste, it’s just the same thing as trying to be conscious about it. Warped Tour, has the Eco- Initiative program, every venue usually has some sort of on-site recycling. It’s definitely do-able, especially on Warped Tour. Other tours seem to be harder.

IG: Out of all the band on this tour, who do you think is the most earth conscious?

AMP: Oh jeez, I really don’t know…

AMP: We do the best we can with our band, but I don’t know.

AMP: I remember last year we had a contest and bands would basically compete to get the most, I don’t know if it was in weight or the number, of bottles to recycle, but Escape the Fate was pretty good.
